A Canonical Hermit is a person who

- Lives his/her life apart from others so that he/she may spend extended time in prayer and reflection
- Publicly professes poverty, chastity and obedience either by vow or sacred bond
- Lives his/her life under the direction of his/her Bishop who accepts he/she as a Hermit, and guides he/she in the setting up of their way of life
- Continues to support himself/herself by some form of ministry
